2022 Acura MDX: It’s all about the bass

If you’re strolling through the Beach and hear the powerful pulse of “Hotel California” emanating from an Acura, you may have just crossed paths with Gerry Tate. This owner of a local advertising agency is happy to admit that a major selling point of his new 2022 Acura MDX A-Spec was its premium audio system. With surround-sound classics from the Eagles and Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” in regular rotation, this passionate audiophile tells us why he loves his vehicle.

First person: “I’m not shy to say that I love a good audio system,” said Tate, who leased his 2022 Acura MDX from Acura Pickering in May. “My former MDX used to play surround-sound, but you’d have to use a disk. Whereas with this new one you can plug in a hard drive with your music, and it just sounds incredible.

“I’ve had three MDXs in the past and before that I had an Acura RDX. It’s been a very solid car for myself and my family but the last few versions of the MDX were kind of old, technology-wise. I’ve been waiting on this one — all the technology is brand new,” he said. “It’s got wireless Apple CarPlay and Android compatibility, and a really large charging pad so you just have to plop your phone on it and go. It’s also got a big 12-inch screen on the center console and the driving screen is now all digital. I love it.

“My office is at the end of my street so unlike others I don’t have to commute to work. But we have a cottage in Sauble Beach, and we use it a lot to go up there. The property is on a beach, so you have to drive over that terrain to get to it. It’s managed those trips perfectly.

“The MDXs are really good in the winter as well — they have a snow mode you can put the car in and come with standard all-wheel-drive, which has been really helpful,” said Tate. “The funny thing about the Canadian version of this car is that it comes standard with heated steering wheel, heated seats and air-conditioned seats, and in the United States they don’t have all those features. So as Canadians, because of our winters, we benefit from some extra perks, which is great.”

It’s got the look

“Every year the MDX gets a bit better looking,” said Tate. “This year’s version is longer and wider and with the A-Spec version they’ve blacked out all the chrome. It looks really sharp.” Matching its eye-catching exterior, drivers will find premium details, including genuine wood or embossed patterned metal trim, and available customizable ambient lighting.

On the road

The newest Acura MDX was engineered for acceleration, responsive agility and for taking on the road less travelled. Equipped with fourth generation Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, the vehicle boasts track-inspired torque-vectoring technology, as well as an all-new light duty truck platform. Its unique double wishbone front suspension means highly responsive handling to help with improved traction. Meanwhile, its all-digital Virtual Cockpit makes the driving experience personal — displaying all your on-the-road information in brilliant HD.

Interior comfort

Encouraging drivers to spend some quality time in their car, the MDX features 12-way power adjustable seats with four-way power lumbar support and available 16-way positioning for maximum comfort on the road. With more cargo space than ever before (the vehicle features a Smart Slide 2nd-row seat and a removable centre seat), road trips in the 2022 Acura MDX are an absolute must — just don’t forget to bring along your favourite tunes and blast them proudly using the car’s available 16-speaker ELS Studio 3D Premium Audio System.
